Oranje Crush

On the morning of June 20, Greenbriar Drive disappeared beneath a river of orange. Thousands of Dutch supporters in jerseys, wigs, capes and inflatable crowns streamed toward Rice Stadium, surrounding the Netherlands’ orange double-decker fan bus with singing, dancing and occasional horn blasts. For a few exuberant, fun-filled hours, one of soccer’s most recognizable fan traditions unfolded on Rice’s doorstep. The gathering marked the return of the Oranje Fanwalk, a tradition that has followed the Netherlands’ national team around the world for more than two decades.

For Rice, it became one of the most visible expressions of its role as an Official Houston World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter. The event drew an estimated 10,000 Dutch supporters and Houstonians to the west side of campus and eventually Greenbriar — temporarily rebranded as Oranjebriar — before the 2.5-mile march to Houston Stadium to watch the Netherlands beat Sweden 5-1. Rice flags mingled with Dutch banners, and Sammy the Owl climbed aboard the bus to join the celebration. Even though it lasted only a few hours, the transformation captured something larger: a Houston street, a Rice landmark and a global fan tradition converging in one improbable burst of orange exhilaration and international pride.
